( Personality ) :

When Tatara was younger, he didn't get really attached to people; he didn't cry at his adoptive father's funeral, just commented to Mikoto and Izumo how his adoptive father had told him he was a cold hearted person, being interested in everything but not clinging to anything, and that he hoped he'd find something so important to him that he'd cling to it.

Shortly after his adoptive father said that, he met Mikoto and felt that he was going to become someone amazing. He's really very friendly, but, because of his feeling that Mikoto was special, he stalked Mikoto for a while. The first time they actually really spoke was after some punks beat him up and sent him to the hospital. Izumo told him that he wouldn't be safe around Mikoto, but he kept following him anyway. Tatara's reckless like that. He could tell that Mikoto was different, replying to Mikoto's complaints about picking up stray people five years later with "You say that, but they're all important to you, right?". For a while, Izumo didn't think Tatara was dealing from a full deck. He got beat up by thugs after following Mikoto around, but then he keeps following him? What kind of idiot does that?

Tatara is an idiot, at least in that regard. He's also a hypocrite; he wants everyone else to be happy and think of themselves a little, but he doesn't care for himself the same way. He's quite happy being the "protector" like the earring in his left ear signifies. He doesn't have any sense of self-preservation; he went to meet with Eric back before Eric joined the Red Clan even knowing that Eric would likely try to kill him. Fujishima gets mad at him for it - "Please have a little wariness!" "S-sorry, I really didn't expect that Fujishima would get involved in this..." "Not that! You, if you keep this up, you'll really end up dead someday!". Fujishima really cares about Tatara, and it's obvious with how mad he is during that scene. Everyone in HOMRA save for Anna, Mikoto, and Izumo call Tatara "Totsuka-san", showing how important he is to them. He's not much older than they are, but they all talk to him as politely as they can.

How Tatara interacts with other members of HOMRA is quite telling on what he thinks of them and their time together. For example, Kusanagi-san is still how he refers to Izumo, likely because Izumo is four years older than he is. Tatara only uses honorifics for three members of HOMRA including Izumo, but Izumo is the only one where it's out of respect. Back when Fushimi was a part of HOMRA, Tatara called him Saru-kun because he knew he didn't like it and felt that if he got Saruhiko to admit it, he'd fit in more. The other person is San-chan. It's not really clear if he started calling him San-chan before or after Shouhei joins HOMRA though. He calls Eric and Anna by their first names; because Anna is Anna and Eric isn't a Japanese name. Mikoto is King though and has been since Tatara followed him around in middle school. Everyone in HOMRA is precious to him, and he wants to keep the precious memories everyone's made alive. It's because of these memories, the memories he records for the others that he wants to be happy, that his catchphrase is "Hey, don't sweat it. It'll all work out." He honestly believes it will work out, even if it's HOMRA dealing with his death.

Tatara is the weakest member of HOMRA, acting as the chain to hold Mikoto back if he's drawn too far into his power. The first part is something everyone knows - Yukibiri Maria said something along the lines of "You know where he is, 'HOMRA's Weakest Executive'". Tatara doesn't fight; this is also common knowledge. Tatara's job among the Red Clan is to take care of the newcomers and make sure they feel like they fit in, along with holding Mikoto back. The one member who barely has any Red Aura to speak of fits in, and he's trying to make everyone else feel as at home in HOMRA as he and Anna do. Because the Red Clan is so violent, and he's so comfortable around them, while Maria was cutting into his neck with her nails, Tatara actually asks her a question. He's not scared at all, just calmly asking if she likes Chitose and why she's so upset. He doesn't care for his safety at all, more concerned with others and how they're feeling. He's rather like a wild animal trainer in that regard; he can't fight but is perfectly comfortable among those who do nothing but fight.

You wouldn't think that someone as cheerful as Tatara would want to spend his time with a group of people like HOMRA, but HOMRA is his home. He even came along with them on raids to say things like "That's no good. If you do it, he won't leave any blood, bone, or even ash behind!" when Mikoto talks about burning people. He's really very curious, often picking up a hobby and not continuing it after only a few weeks, and after joining HOMRA, he dragged new and old members into them. He's also rather good at making things up with a completely straight face or even a bright smile, like when he told Shouhei that Kamamoto loses weight in the summer because he was storing and using his winter fat, causing a boost in his flames.

It's likely because Anna told him that he wouldn't live very long if he stuck around Mikoto that he doesn't ever record himself, only his voice. He wants those times to remain happy for his fellow Clansmen and his King, even after he's gone. They were the first things he found important enough to cling to after all.
( Strengths/Weaknesses ) :
+ He's a huge optimist
+ He can diffuse almost any situation. Izumo says, "Everything would be easier if he was there, even our enemies would put down their guard around him"
+ Good with people. His job in HOMRA was to take care of the newcomers and make sure they felt like they fit in.
+ He has a good singing voice and can play the guitar -- if you want to listen.
+ / - As a Red Clansman, Tatara really can't do much offensively. He can melt mechanisms in locks to open them, but that takes a lot of energy. Making a fire phoenix like he did for Anna in K Side: Red is very painful and doesn't last very long at all. He can't get hurt by any other Red Clansman's flames though. Tatara is has the weakest flames, but he can tune his flames into those of other HOMRA members, including Mikoto. Tatara's job is to stop Mikoto from hurting others if it isn't necessary.
?? "That's right. By the way, isn't burning a body part your strong point, Totsuka?" "Ehhhhh?" "You're weak, but you're pretty skilled, right? Don't you usually use your flame to amputate fingers from hands?"
+ / - He's really curious and likes to try new things, but often those don't last very long. His photography hobby actually lasted long for him because he "could never get tired of keeping these memories alive".
- For all Tatara is part of HOMRA, he's useless in a fight. Not only does he not fight, he's told to run whenever there is danger.
- Bad sense of direction. He ran for the abandoned building instead of a populated area
- Tatara doesn't want to protect himself. He's the kind of person who would choose to get hurt if it means no one else would have to be.


( Other Important Facts ) :
He'll be keeping his powers since he hasn't actually died yet!
When he was still in middle school and Izumo and Mikoto were in highschool, Tatara convinced them to play a chicken race off an ocean cliff. Izumo stopped, Tatara fell, and Mikoto went straight off the edge. Izumo's alive, Tatara died by chance (for him), and Mikoto headed straight for his death.

He can still hear Yata's crying, but Tatara feels like he can't stay awake any longer. He's heard about this; he knows what it means. He is about to die, and the Colorless King is the one responsible.]

Tatara gives them small smile, grateful he could die before Yata sees the tears fall from his eyes.

He'd do anything for the members of HOMRA, so he can't help but feel sad that his death is going to affect them like he knows it will. They'll do anything to get revenge, even die in the process. They should really think of themselves more...If he is able to watch after he's gone, then seeing them fall to pieces because of him would be the worst thing. He hopes his words were true. "Don't sweat it, it'll work out somehow". It's fine that he's dying, at least for him. There's more things he's wanted to do, but....everyone dies sometime. He just hopes HOMRA will recover from this, that they'll be okay.

Shouldn't he be dead? He can't see Yata anymore...Yata's arms feel really hard too. Like a rock. They didn't feel like that a moment ago... He opens his eyes, carefully turning his head to look around.]

E-eh? [This isn't that rooftop! Where'd he go? And why is he still alive? He got shot!]

[This Bar HOMRA seems kind of empty, doesn't it? It's missing all the knickknacks he stored here over the years... The old jukebox in the corner that they barely ever used, all the egg replicas Kusanagi complained about but polished anyway, his bonsai, the nicks in floor from fights, the scratch marks from his poor attempts at learning how to skateboard from Yata, his guitar, the movie projecter... He should fix that! And maybe find a new hobby while he's at it!

With that thought in mind, Tatara turns on the SFC, smiling brightly.]
